An 18-year-old final-year student of O’Reilly Senior High School in Accra has been fatally stabbed following a confrontation with a fellow student on Monday. The deceased, Edward Borketey Sackey, a General Arts student, was reportedly involved in an argument with another studment over whose father was wealthier. The dispute escalated into a physical altercation, during which Sackey was stabbed multiple times.
The incident, which occurred on the school campus shortly after the students had completed an examination, has left the school community in shock. Sackey was rushed to the hospital by his peers, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The alleged assailant, identified only as Godwin from the Visual Arts class, has been taken into police custody and is currently under investigation.
In response to the tragic incident, the Ghana Education Service (GES) convened an emergency meeting on Tuesday with the management of O’Reilly Senior High School, the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, and the Municipal Director of Education for Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA). The meeting focused on reviewing the school’s disciplinary measures and ensuring the safety of students on campus.
Stephen Abamfo, the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, confirmed that a thorough investigation is being conducted to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident. He also emphasized the need to enhance security and discipline within the school.
Meanwhile, the father of the deceased has expressed frustration over the lack of official communication from the school regarding his son’s death. He, along with family members, visited the school on Tuesday to seek answers and justice for his son.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about student safety and the effectiveness of disciplinary measures in schools across the country. As investigations continue, the GES has assured the public that all necessary steps will be taken to prevent a recurrence of such a tragedy.
